Jean Luc Ndayikengurukiye is likely to be retained as captain of the national volleyball team when Rwanda takes part in next month’s 2008 Olympic qualifiers in Durban, South Africa.

The APR spikier has been named captain for the 18-man provisional team that is currently undergoing daily training sessions at Amahoro indoor stadium.

With his fighting and leadership skills coupled with a ‘never say die’ attitude, the local volleyball governing body feels he is the best man for the job.

"His ‘never give up’ attitude, confidence and leadership skills make him a great leader on and off the court,” the team’s assistant coach Emmanuel Ndungutse noted.
The APR veteran has been national team captain since 2005.

On top of Ndayikengurukiye, Cesar Rubayita, Charles Nkurunziza, Alphonse Nsengiyumva, Irakarama Guillaume, Eric Nsabimana, Yakan Guma, Alexis Nkuranga, Fidele Nyirimana, Pierre Marshal Kwizera and Benjamin Kagabo who represented Rwanda at last year’s African Cup of Nations competitions in South Africa; Elie Mutabazi, Adolf Mutoni, Alexis Ntakirutimana, Flavier Ndamukunda, Ossey Byabagamba and Herve Kagimbura are the other players pushing for national team slots.

Twelve countries including Africa’s giants Egypt and Algeria have lined up for the qualifiers that will run from February 1-10.  Meanwhile, the national team head coach Gerard Jouault is set to link up with the squad tomorrow.

The French tactician was initially expected to arrive last Friday but had his arrival date revised so as to renew his contract.

The Frenchman took full charge of the team back in August 2006 but is yet to score big. During his reign, Rwanda failed to qualify for the 2007 All Africa Games after finishing third behind hosts Sudan and eventual winners Kenya.

Rwanda also failed to get past the preliminary stage of the 2007 African Cup of Nations that was staged in South Africa.
