RWANDA’s U-17 side wants nothing short of a win in today’s U-20 Cecafa championship third place playoff against Kenya.
Victory will be a good morale booster for Richard Tardy’s team, who succumbed to a 1-0 defeat in Wednesday’s semi-final against hosts Eritrea.
Moments later, Uganda’s Hippos who moved a step closer to defending their Cecafa U-20 title by overcoming Kenya 2-1 in the semi finals will try to retain the title when they play Eritrea.
In Thursday’s semi-final between Kenya and Uganda, the former had the most opportunities but it was the Hippos, winners in Burundi three years ago, who utilized their chances better.
They took the lead in the 14th minute when Juma Sadam’s free-kick found its way into the corner of the net with hardly any Kenyan moving.
Jacob Kelli gave Kenya the equalizer in added time of the first half when he beat defender Ivan Bukenya to the ball and lobbed over Buule Godwin in goal.
The winner came in the 50th minute when leading scorer (5) Dan Sserunkuma capitalised on Charles Ballah’s hesitation in clearing to lob over advancing Kenyan goalie Mohamed Musa.
In his pre-match interview, Ugandan coach Frank Anyau said that pressure would be on the Eritreans.
"We feared Kenya most. They have the stamina but against Eritrea, we shall play an easy game,” he said.
"We promised to play five matches and win all of them. We have played and won four so Eritrea should help us realize our dream,” Anyau said.
The winner will pocket $10,000 while first and second runners will settle for $5,000 and $3,000 respectively.
