Nyaruguru - Seven sectors of the  Nyaruguru district are set to benefit from an electric power connection project  to the national grid, local authorities have revealed.

Felix Sibomana, the district mayor told The New Times that district authorities in close conjunction with  the Ministry of Infrastructure, have earmarked over Rwf3 billion towards the connection of seven sectors of the district to the national grid.

Previously, the district extended power to Kibeho sector, where already  numerous small businesses have sprang up. Sibomana  said he hoped that electricity will boost business in the seven sectors as was the case with  Kibeho sector.

"Electricity connection is bound to transform how business is being done in the targeted sectors. The idea is to have as many people being engaged in off farm activities as is possible for the purposes of widening income levels within the district,” Sibomana said.

The district authorities are also positive that the power connection project will promote general service delivery in the area.

The residents from one of targeted sectors to be connected to electricity welcomed development.

"Electric power will translate into more profits for business persons while at the social levels life will be much better,” said Faustin Nzabamwita, from Cyahinda sector.

With funding from the Common Development Fund (CDF)-and the water and electricity utility company RECO- RWASCO, a 15 kilometre stretch has been so far been connected mainly in the central business district of Kibeho and Ndago.

The new sectors set to be connected to the national grid include Cyahinda, Nyagisozi, Ruheru, Minini and Busanze. A feasibility study for the project has so far been conducted and the project is already at the implementation stage, according to the Mayor.
