RWAMAGANA - District authorities have mobilised farmers to use improved maize seed varieties to boost production as the next season dubbed A 211 begins.

Addressing Gahengeri sector residents on Wednesday, the district Mayor, Nehemi Uwimana, disclosed that over 800 hectares have been prepared  for maize planting.

"Our plan is simple; we want every family to get enough to eat. No one should talk about scarcity of market because it’s not the issue at the moment,” he said.

Placid Nsengiyunva, the Sector Executive Secretary, said residents have been sensitized enough on new techniques of production for the purposes of ensuring a bumper harvest.

He added that local leaders will supervise the production of maize from planting to harvesting.

"At least every village (Mudugudu) has set aside 20 hectares for maize planting. We have already ploughed the land and we have the hybrid seeds from RADA…We are thus expecting  a big maize harvest in Gahengeri,” he said.

The sector Agriculture Officer, Celestin Nzabonimana, said maize planting techniques  have been mastered by all residents, unlike in the past when production was affected by ignorance of growers and the lack of supervision.

"Apart from providing high quality seeds, fertilizers will be availed to farmers at a subsidised price. So, with maximum technical supervision, I believe there will be high maize production,” he said.
