GICUMBI - A man said to be mentally disturbed, last Friday, killed his wife, Police said yesterday.
Froduard Bizumuremyi, 34 and a resident of Nyamiyaga Sector, Gicumbi District, allegedly smashed 26- year old Console Mukeshimana’s head with a club on suspicion she was having an affair.
Police at Byumba Police station say Bizumuremyi had earlier been admitted to Ndera Psychiatric Hospital in Kigali, where he recovered and was discharged to rejoin his family.
"Bizumuremyi later re- developed mental illness and decided to kill his wife,” said the Police source, adding that the accused refused to talk to anybody after the incident.
"He has decided to keep silent throughout. He does not talk to anybody, including the police,” added the source.
Nyamiyaga Sector civil status officer, Dominique Savio Nsingizumuremyi, told The New Times, that prior to the murder, residents heard Bizumuremyi claiming that ‘an unknown voice’ told him his wife commits adultery and deserves to be killed.
"Residents say Bizumuremyi used to trail his wife every time she went to fetch water or firewood in the neighbourhood to ensure she does not cheat on him,” said Nsingizumuremyi.
By press time on Tuesday, Bizumuremyi was still lying on his bed at Byumba Hospital Psychiatric department, with his hands handcuffed to the bed.
The Director of Byumba Hospital, Fred Muhairwe said Bizumuremyi will be referred to Ndera Hospital, if his condition does not improve.
The late Mukeshimana was buried on Saturday and is survived by three children.
