The twins who had been delivered through a caesarean operation had both their heads joined and the operation was meant to separate them.

The twins who had been delivered through a caesarean operation had both their heads joined and the operation was meant to separate them. The operation was undertaken by a team of doctors headed by Dr Jeanvier Hitayezu. Medical authorities added that the twins died shortly after the operation.
Siamese twins are born as a result of failed division of eggs or the embryo, according to Dr Hitayezu. The anomaly occurs during second to third week after fertilisation.
"This case shows that their cell separation process started from their heads but failed at the stage of the body, resulting into a situation where the twins are born with two heads co joined. However such occurrence is very rare,” said Dr Hitayezu.
The medic added that the mother was of the Siamese twins Jeanne Uwamahoro 28, from Rusatira in Huye district, is now out of danger.
