The main suspect in,  last week’s burglary at Ndoli’s Joint Supermarket-Forex Bureau at Kisementi, Kicukiro District, has handed himself to the police, The New Times has learnt.

During the robbery, $39,000 (approximately Rwf 22.8m), Rwf 3.9m and 10,000 Burundi francs was stolen.

John Bosco Kawunda, 27, who has worked for the renowned supermarket for the last four years had jumped off  a police vehicle as he was being transported to Nyamata Police Station in Bugesera District together with his accomplice, David Rukundo, 24.

This was after they were arrested on their way to Burundi via Ruhuha border crossing following a tipoff from motorcycle taxi operators in the area.

Police Spokesperson, Eric Kayiranga, confirmed the development when contacted.

"He presented himself on Thursday evening after he heard on radio news that he was wanted and that his photo was distributed at all border posts,” he said.

Kayiranga, however, said that all the missing money had not been recovered. Only Rwf 3m and USD19,000  had been recovered.  One of the accomplices, Rukundo, who was caught with $19,000 and Rwf 2.5m, told police that he had given one Jimmy Ishimwe Rwf 500, 000 which was also recovered from his home.

Kawunda who connived with Rukundo, also an employee at the supermarket, in the Cash-Power department, is said to have hidden in the supermarket when it was being closed down at the end of a business day.

According to police, Kawunda who knew where the Forex bureau keys were, first disconnected the surveillance cameras but reconnected them after taking the money. 

The cameras, however, managed to capture images of him getting out.
