HUYE - Residents of Mbazi sector in Huye District have decried the shortage of water for the last three months. The shortage comes after the official inauguration of a potable water project in the area, courtesy of the Red Cross and the national water and power utility company, RECO/RWASCO.

When The New Times visited the affected area, residents said that they are now forced to fetch water from swamps. One resident, Chantal Mukaneza, says that they fear the unsafe water could spark off a disease outbreak.

Some people who had set up taps to sell water to residents are also frustrated by the abrupt water shortage.

According to residents, the business person who won the tender to install water pipes in the area pulled out after the district turned down his proposal to increase the price of water.

When contacted, Huye district authorities said the businessman wanted to cheat the population by charging ‘unreasonable price on water,’ promising the problem would be sorted out.
