NYARUGURU - Residents of Nyaruguru District have been urged to access electricity connection through cooperatives.

Christophe Ntirushwa, the district vice Mayor in charge of Economic Affairs, disclosed that residents of Ruramba sector in the same district have grouped themselves in cooperatives and were able install power in their houses.

Designated residential areas have been identified where electricity would be extended to residents, he said. He added that the district through the Community Development Fund (CDF), would also facilitate residents who form cooperatives to easily access electric ity .

Nyaruguru District is one of the eight districts that make up the Southern province, and it is largely made up of rural areas. Its economy is based on agriculture and livestock farming.

Ever since the area was connected to the national power grid, businesses , such as  barber shops have come up, offering cheaper services to residents.

"I am glad we finally have access to electricity in our district. I used to spend more than

Rwf1000 on a generator, but now I use less than Rwf400 per day,” says a barber.

However, the advent of the electricity has not benefited all.
