A report released by police recently, with statistics covering five years (2005 -2010) indicates that crime across the country has significantly gone down.

The report shows the breakdown of the cases as murder, armed robbery; theft, corruption, illegal possession of fire arms, illicit drugs trafficking, bouncing cheques, rape, abortion, manslaughter among other cases.

For instance, the report indicates that crimes targeting Genocide survivors fell from 112 in 2007 to 7 this year while genocide denial cases went down from 719 in 2007 to 192 in 2010.

In total, police recorded 67,629 crimes this year, against the 11,762 cases compiled in 2010, indicting a continuous downward curve. Mathematically, this means that crime has diminished by more than 50 percent.

Police attributed the reduction in crimes to the ability of the police to thwart robbery incidents through intelligence gathering among other security methods.

Indeed, the police has shown how far it has moved to ensure peace and safety for every Rwandan.  Police work must be commended.

However, law enforcement can do more with the community’s involvement. Fighting crime is everybody’s responsibility and volunteering information pertaining to suspected wrongdoers contributes immensely to the reduction in crime rate.

Everyone should take it upon themselves to always be vigilant and volunteer information about suspicious characters.
