RWANDA’S youth side (U-17) will reach the last four of the Cecafa Youth Championship if they beat Yemen and Zanzibar loses to Uganda.
The youngsters were handed a lifeline yesterday evening after the regional football body’s decision to nullify Zanzibar’s 2-1 win over Yemen after finding Zanzibar guilty of fielding an over-aged player.
It was discovered that Mussa Shaban, who plays at the heart of Zanzibar’s midfield was born in April, 1989 as opposed to December 15, 1993.
According to a statement from Cecafa Secretary General Nicholas Musonye, which was emailed to Times Sport yesterday, Yemen was awarded a 3-0 win.
This moved Yemen to second place in Group B with 3 points while Rwanda and Zanzibar languish in third and fourth place with a point each.
Uganda, which has already cemented a semi-final slot after winning its opening fixtures against Rwanda and Yemen, tops the group with six points.
Despite the tournament being reserved for the U-20s, Rwanda is fielding the U-17 side as part of their preparation for the Africa U-17 Youth Championship which will be hosted in Kigali in January, 2011.
