The National University of Rwanda (NUR) is encouraging researchers to find ways of managing scrap generated at the country’s oldest institution of higher learning.

According to the university store manager, Jacqueline Mukarutesi, piles of scrap, especially non-functional computers have accumulated, occupying space that should have been used for useful equipment.

Jean Baptiste Ntirushwa, of the IT department, also said there is concern over the rising amount of scrap in other departments.

"We have a problem handling them (scrap) and urge researchers to urgently address the issue.”

Dr Francois Naramabuye, the Director of the university’s Centre for Environment, Entrepreneurship and Sustainable Development (CEESD), says the country’s policies on electronic wastes remain unclear.

He noted that electronic wastes are among top pollutants on the globe, and that some countries have embraced serious measures to avoid their health and environmental effects.

He added he would consult the Rwanda Environmental Management Authority (REMA) on electronic waste policy. 

The university, in conjunction with the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA), hopes to collaborate with other institutions to implement proper waste management.
