Gefle IF’s new signing Rafael York has vowed to help the team fight to return to the Swedish Allsvenskan League, the country&039;s top level in football.

The Rwanda international signed for Gefle over the weekend on a two-year deal days after rejecting a contract extension with Eskilstuna.

He returns to the second tier club he previously played for in 2016 on loan from Sandvikens IF.

"My ambition is to help the club back to the level it belongs. The team had many fine seasons during their time in the Allsvenskan." The 23-year-old told the team's media.

"The most important aspect is that I am ready to work hard and raise the level of the club and mine as well,” he added.

York further revealed that he had so many offers on table but he turned them down to join a team from his hometown.

"Playing for the club in your hometown feels good. I had a good season last year and believe that Gefle is the right place to develop further, take new steps and help the team," he explained.

"Personally, it was the best decision. I had several options, but Gefle is the best based on my needs. I come from Gävle and the city is my home. I will get closer to friends and family. I grew up in the city and have seen many matches," he added.

Born to an Angolan father and a Rwandan mother in the Swedish city of Gavle, York featured for Sweden from U16 up to U19 level amassing a total of 15 caps before switching allegiance to Rwanda in 2021. He has earned five caps in the Amabubi jersey so far.

At club level, he also featured for clubs including Bochum in Germany, Kalmar FF, and AFC Eskilstuna.
