THE U-17 national team head coach Richard Tardy has been impressed by his team’s display despite losing 3-1 to Uganda in the ongoing Cecafa Youth Development Championship in Asmara, Eritrea.
Despite the tournament being for the U-20s, Rwanda is fielding the U-17 side as part of their preparations for the Africa U-17 Youth Championship which will be host Kigali in January, 2011.
French coach Richard Tardy was impressed by his side’s showing, noting that it was beyond his expectations to see the junior team play an entertaining football against the Uganda side which has gained wide experience on the regional beyond.
"We came here with a very young side on a learning mission and we hope to have prepared a good side for the January event.
"The boys have played only one international before and were clearly afraid of the Ugandans but when they composed themselves, they played better,” he told the post match press conference.
Defending champions Uganda put on a great show as they beat Rwanda 3-1 in their Group B match on Monday night. Speedy winger Dan Sserunkuma scored a hat trick for the Ugandan team.
Rwanda’s skipper Emery Bayisenge fired home an 85th minute free-kick but it was only a consolation. Rwanda return to action this afternoon against Zanzibar at 3pm before Uganda hosts Yemen at 5pm.
Zanzibar scored twice in their first match guest side Yemen 2-1 on Sunday and Tardy will be hoping his young guns can snatch maximum points so as to realize their chances of reaching the knock out stage.
