MUSANZE - A man who on Monday allegedly conned a secondary school student of his fees has been arrested and detained by Police in Musanze district.

Wellars Ntakirutimana, was handed over to Police by local defence personnel, while his colleague identified only as Kazungu, disappeared with Rwf40,000 allegedly extorted from the student.

Upon arrest, Ntakirutimana narrated that he first ‘advised’ his victim to keep the money in a secure envelop which he offered to seal for him.

"I had two envelops which I used to confuse the student… I told him that there were thieves out there,” he said. "So I exchanged the envelop giving him one which contained papers and gave my friend the one which had money.’’

Eye witnesses said the Senior Five student at Nyagatovu Secondary School, in Nyabihu district, sounded the alarm after he realised that he had been conned.

"We saw a student crying and fighting the man, as he called for help, when we intervened the man started pleading for mercy,’’ said Claude Ndizeye who helped the local defence personnel to arrest the suspect.

The conman later called his wife, to bring him money, after his colleague failed to return and he paid back the money.
