Lecturers have been urged to be confident while delivering lectures to their students as one way of ensuring quality.

The advice was given yesterday by the Executive Director of Higher Education Council (HEC), Prof. Geoffrey Rugege, during a workshop on Curriculum Development in Higher Education Institutions.

The meeting which brought together Deans of Faculty and Directors of Quality Assurances from higher institutions of learning is aimed at helping lecturers fine-tune the materials they give to students and how they deliver them.

"Lecturers have to be confident before their students because without it, students cannot understand what the lecturer gives them,” said Rugege.

He added that it is the duty of the lecturers to make sure that students understand the materials they are given and how they are going to be assessed.

He, however added that the confidence comes with having the required understanding of what the lecturer is delivering which requires a lot of reading and research.

According to Rugege, the workshop was also partly organised because lecturers were having problems in understanding the new modular system of teaching.
The modular system allows the component of several teachers delivering several sections of the same module which helps in quality assurance due to the more detailed nature of the subjects.

HEC is working around the clock to ensure that all institutions adopt this kind of teaching in the 2011 academic year. The new system allows participatory learning for the students and encourages research.
