The East African Community (EAC) will this week hold its second annual conference on the promotion of good governance in Nairobi, Kenya.

The Conference to be held under the theme, "Good Governance for Sustainable Integration, Stability and Development”, will be held from Thursday to Friday at the Hilton hotel.

According to the EAC Deputy Secretary General (Political Federation) Beatrice Kiraso, the conference will build on the gains made from the previous one that was held in January in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

"The conference will broadly discuss Human Rights, Corruption, Electoral processes, Rule of Law and Administration of Justice in the region and how they relate to good governance vis-a-vis EAC integration, stability and development,” Kiraso said in a statement obtained by The New Times yesterday.

"The Conference will also specifically discuss and enrich the EAC Draft Protocol on Good Governance.”

Kiraso said the objectives of the conference include enhancing political dialogue among institutions responsible for promoting good governance in the region.

It will also to create a synergy between national, regional and international organizations on strategies towards improving governance in the EAC integration process.
Kenya’s Director of Public Prosecutions, Keriako Tobiko, will discuss the challenges and opportunities of strengthening administration of justice and upholding the rule of law in East Africa.

Promotion and protection of human rights as a precondition for good governance, and the role of the media in promoting good governance will be among other discussion papers at the conference.

The conference recommendations will be considered and incorporated into the ongoing projects and programmes towards promoting good governance in the EAC.
