KIGALI - The Rwanda Patriotic Front (RPF)-Inkotanyi has expressed delight over the landslide win registered by its candidate, Paul Kagame, in the concluded Presidential polls, saying that it is a sign of confidence Rwandans have in the party.

In an exclusive interview with The New Times, the RPF Secretary General, Francois Ngarambe, said that the massive turnout and the majority of Rwandans voting for Kagame, is a sign that Rwandans recognise the achievements of the party and are willing to continue with President Kagame.

"As a party we are happy. Rwandans turned up in big numbers and exercised their right to vote. The result shows the confidence they have in the party and the candidate that represented it,” Ngarambe said.

He went on to criticise reports in some sections of the media that the elections lacked credible competition. 

"Some people are saying that there was no credible opposition and that Rwandans didn’t have options. That is false. As a party, we commend government for having put in place conditions for competitive opposition to emerge, but we don’t create opposition.”

"International media is not responsible for creating opposition in the country or whatever they call credible opposition is not necessarily opposition. Rwandans are not given fundamental rights by the international press. They know what they want,” Ngarambe added.

He pointed out that the majority of the Rwandan people recognise the achievements of RPF which are tangible. Therefore, they (Rwandans) feel the party should continue with the leadership that has put development at the forefront.

Ngarambe noted that Rwandans showed their position by choosing the leader they want and their choice should be respected. He added that as a party the RPF, is delighted with the result and is determined to continue on the same path.

All the three candidates in the race have acknowledged the results and congratulated the winner.

According to results released, on Wednesday, by the National Electoral Commission, Paul Kagame registered a massive 93.08%, while Prosper Higiro (Liberal Party) 1.37%, Dr. Jean Damascene Ntawukuliryayo (PSD) 5.15% and Dr Alvera Mukabaramba (PPC) 0.40%.
