RUHANGO - A truck driver, who attempted to bribe traffic Police in Ruhango District, has been arrested, Police said yesterday.
Focus Hitimana, 26, was arrested on August 8, as he offered Rwf10.000 bribe to two traffic officers who flagged him down and found he had no driving permit.
He was driving a Fuso cargo truck Reg. No. RAB 009D, on the Butare- Kigali highway, Ruhango Police said.
Police said the crime is punishable under Penal code, No.23/2003-on curbing corruption and other related tendencies.
If convicted Hitimana may serve 2-4 years in jail.
"Residents should know their rights and should in no way bribe the police. The police force is well trained and integral and we advise residents to be aware that bribes are punishable,” Police said.
Hitimana told The New Times, that he was aware of the offence, but was driven by the urgency after the truck’s rightful driver refused to transport the cargo, which was urgently needed in Butare town.
"I was compelled to drive and I thought there wouldn’t be any problem since I had passed the driving permit tests in July,” Hitimana stated.
