Officials from the University of Scranton, US, are in the country to explore possible areas of partnership with the Ministry of Education on how they can assist in the development of tertiary education in the country.

The American institution is known for its dynamic approach to education, grounded in the vision of St. Ignatius Loyola and is focused on promoting equality and social justice.

Speaking to The New Times, yesterday, the president of the university, Scott R. Pilarz, said that they were interested in partnering with Rwanda due to its success story and what it has to offer to the University.

"Due to the history of Rwanda and its tremendous improvement in human rights promotion and economic development, we are seeking to partner with the Government of Rwanda to integrate an examination of the country into the life of the university,” he said.

The officials also said that Rwanda had much to offer the university in terms of academic enrichment and global understanding. 

Scranton University faculty and students, he said, are interested in understanding issues surrounding democracy and citizens’ empowerment in Rwanda.

Pilarz also said that the university was due to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Education which is expected to focus on students and faculty exchange programmes.

The partnership would include, according to the university’s vice president in charge of Academic Affairs, Harold W. Baillie, carrying out various projects.

Baillie added that they will also help develop the capacity of faculty staff of local institutions of higher learning.

The university is planning to confer an honorary doctorate on President Paul Kagame next year for inspiration and the impact he has had on their students, the officials said.
