Seven people were injured yesterday when a grenade blast hit downtown Kigali at the busy terminal commonly known as kwa Rubangura on the stage where Taxis heading to Nyamirambo park.

According to eye witnesses, a loud explosion went off just after 6 pm during rush hour. The wounded were rushed to Kigali Central Teaching Hospital (CHUK) for treatment.

When The New Times visited the scene, Police had cordoned off the scene of the blast and blood stains could be seen on the tarmac. A motorbike suspected to have been carrying the assailants was lying on the ground.

Police and army top brass convened at the scene to ascertain the damage as anxious relatives rushed to CHUK to identify their relatives. At CHUK doctors attended to the wounded and traumatised.

"Seven people have been injured in the blast, two critically. The injured were children. Three people were arrested immediately. We will update you as investigations continue,” Police Spokesperson, Eric Kayiranga, told the media at CHUK.

The Minister of Health Dr. Richard Sezibera, who immediately arrived at the hospital, said that some of the injured were being treated at CHUK and Kibagabaga Hospital

He said government will provide treatment at no cost.
