The Rwanda National Police (RNP) has announced it has put in place new mechanisms to ensure today’s Presidential elections are peaceful.

In an interview with The New Times, the force’s Spokesperson, Eric Kayiranga, said that all police officers have been engaged in the electoral process in all parts of the country to protect the election materials, staff and voters at all polling stations around the country.

"All police officers have been engaged in the elections to ensure a secure process, especially for the election D-day,” Kayiranga said.

Police, he said provided 112 and 999 as the toll free line during these elections for whoever has information that would disorganize today’s elections.

Kayiranga also said that the Presidential campaigns which kicked off July 20 and ended August 7 registered no case of violence.

"The campaigns were secure and peaceful and no cases of crimes were committed in the whole process,” he said.

"All this was achieved because of the good partnership with other security organs such as community policing, Local Defence Unit (LDU) and the local population,” he added.
