BURERA — District last week received cash award of Frw1million from the office of the Ombudsman, for exhibiting best performance in the fight against corruption and injustice among residents in 2007.
Addressing thousands of residents, who braved heavy afternoon down pour at Rugarama sector, the Minister of Local Government, Protais Musoni who presided over the awarding ceremony said that the achievement should serve as a good lesson; to other districts to develop a spirit of competition and excellence.
He asked residents to set achievable performance contracts from within their families that would be evaluated by Sector officials.
"You should orient your efforts towards competitive work and measurable action plans by following a clear path of economic revolution,’’ Musoni said.
Meanwhile, Rugarama was recognised as the best Sector nation-wide in initiating development activities for local residents.
The activities included large scale Irish potato production with over 27 tons in stock, honey processing industry, clean piped water, 27 residents’ cooperative unions engaged in business and having settled all land wrangles which had reportedly created sharp divisions in the district.
Governor Boniface Rucagu challenged other Sectors to "bend before the best performing Sectors and districts, and only rise up after they have also achieved something." He said competition should sink deep into every ones heart as they strive for change.
Farmers displayed grains, maize, fruits and honey harvested from the hills of Mt. Muhabura and along the Ruhondo and Burera rivers.
During the same occasion, Rafiki and other five athletes from the district presented over five medals won at local and international levels in athletics and cycling tournaments last year.
