UN inspects police ahead of Haiti deployment

A two-man team from the United Nations (UN) yesterday inspected the Formed Police Unit (FPU), Rwanda, which will be deployed in Haiti for Peacekeeping operations. Giorgio Giaimo and Priya Sehgal from the UN divisions of Police and logistical support respectively first met with the Commissioner General of Police (CGP), Emmanuel Gasana at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) headquarters in Kacyiru who briefed them on the FPU preparations.

A two-man team from the United Nations (UN) yesterday inspected the Formed Police Unit (FPU), Rwanda, which will be deployed in Haiti for Peacekeeping operations.

Giorgio Giaimo and Priya Sehgal from the UN divisions of Police and logistical support respectively first met with the Commissioner General of Police (CGP), Emmanuel Gasana at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) headquarters in Kacyiru who briefed them on the FPU preparations.

Police Spokesperson, Eric Kayiranga, said that the police chief briefed them on the FPU training, acquiring of equipments to be used when on mission and the force’s doctrine.

"He told them Rwanda’s commitment to continue contributing in peacekeeping operations as a country that experienced war and Genocide and Rwanda’s dedication to give a hand in bringing peace and security in troubled countries,” Kayiranga said

About 160 police officers, 15 female, will be deployed in the eastern part of the recent earthquake flattened country which left over 200,000 dead to provide, among others, humanitarian assistance, security of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and crowd control under United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH).

This brings the number of police officers in Haiti to 204 following the recent deploying of other 44 who are working as police advisors.

The team also inspected FPU equipments which include communications, fire fighting, electrical, vehicles and office equipment.
