This is in reference to your article entitled "BPR to roll out more ATMs " . Please allow me to congratulate Ben Kalkman, Chief Executive Officer, BPR and his team on this great initiative. This will surely facilitate access to banking services and also make it far more convenient for customers.
You recently reported that a Credit Bureau is now in place in Rwanda. That is also a great move in the right direction so that banks do not get saddled with non-performing assets and with loans which are not serviced effectively.
Some time ago, the Reserve Bank of India made it mandatory for all banks to permit non-customers use of their ATMs without levying any charge. This has helped tremendously in effectively spreading the network of ATMs and avoiding having ATMs of different banks all clustered together.
Space comes at a premium in any important city. Mumbai and Kigali both have similar space constraints. By encouraging sharing of ATMs, space can be used more effectively and the cost of ATMs can then be shared the way it is now done all over India.
