MUSANZE - The district Mayor, Winifrida Mpembyemungu, has called upon all grassroots leaders in the district to ensure peaceful, secure and orderly elections, during the polls slated for August 9.

Mpembyemungu, who was addressing over 400 village leaders in the district, said that local leaders bear a huge responsibility in ensuring good governance, development and security within their communities.

The Mayor was meeting the group to assess the preparations for the forthcoming presidential elections. Security officials also attended the meeting.

"This period is very delicate, each of the local leaders is expected to monitor the events in their communities and report any irregularities that may  arise,’’ Mpembemungu said.

It was revealed that a resident of Nyange sector, identified as Innocent Hakizimana, was last week arrested by local authorities and handed to police for destroying campaign leaflets belonging to one of the presidential candidates.

The district police commander, Chief Superintendent Claude Kajeguhakwa, urged the local authorities to partner with police for the purposes of ensuring smooth and peaceful elections.

He noted there is urgent need to install public lights on all the houses within Musanze town suburbs in order to fight night crimes.

Pastor Fred Nyamurangwa, from Demobilization and Reintegration Commission, said that Rwandans should shun people seeking to bribe  voters and instead look to the future when deciding their next president.
