One of the longest serving journalists at Radio Rwanda, Victoria Nganyira, passed away, yesterday morning, at Kanombe Military Hospital.

Nganyira, who worked at Radio Rwanda for over 40 years, is said to have developed respiratory complications shortly before her passing away.

Willy Rukundo, the acting Director General of ORINFOR, which is the parent company of Radio Rwanda, said that her death had dealt a heavy blow to the media fraternity since most practitioners always looked up to her for various matters concerning the trade.

"Besides the media fraternity, Victoria will be dearly missed by the public since she had a wide audience especially the children who grew up listening to her show Bana Tuganire. She was a teacher, most of her shows were educative,” Rukundo said.

Born in 1940, in Kamonyi District, Victoria Nganyira attended Primary School in the District and Secondary education at Muramba Teachers Training College in Gisenyi.
After graduating, she taught for a period of one year and later joined Radio Rwanda in August 1968 where she retired in 2009.

She is popularly known for her Waruzi ko (Did You Know?) programme which she consistently moderated for 42 years.

The deceased has left behind seven children including Louise Nganyira who followed her mother’s footsteps and is practicing journalism with Radio Rwanda.
