NORTHERN PROVINCE

GICUMBI — A 28- year old casual labourer at Rukomo trading centre, Yusuf Nziyumvira, on Thursday afternoon hurled two hand grenades into a shop, killing himself, another businessman and injured three.

The man reportedly hurled the first grenade into the shop seriously injuring the shop attendant, Emmanuel Bizimana. Then residents who arrived to the scene of the explosion prompted the attacker to detonate the second grenade which killed him; and a neighboring businessman only identified as Mporandamye.

Those injured and currently admitted at Byumba hospital were identified as Grecian Manirafasha 25, Felesie Uwimana 27 and Jeanette Ingabire 21, all residents of Rukomo trading centre.

Bizimana says he held a long standing grudge with the attacker which cropped from smuggled merchandise which had been kept at his shop by the attacker; which he [Bizimana] handed over to relevant authorities.

"Nziyumvira has since developed enmity with me leading to this plot to have me killed,” said Bizimana at his hospital bed.

Bizimana sustained injuries on both legs, Manirafasha on the head and legs while Ingabire was hurt in the back and legs. The Sector executive secretary Olivier Munyurangabo said there were no similar incidents in the area in recent times.

"This boy [attacker] has been a mere porter and nobody expected him to possess grenades”, said Munyurangabo. By yesterday, the injured were still admitted at the Intensive care unit and the dead were still kept at the Hospital’s.
