EPIPHANIE Nyirabarame produced a feeble display on the track yesterday to finish a distant 10th in the women’s 10000m of the 17th African Championship in Nairobi, Kenya.

The two-time Olympian failed to bring her vast experience into play at a fairly packed Nyayo stadium as she clocked 36:04.65, almost five minutes off the pace.

Ethiopia’s Tirunesh Dibaba won the race in a time of 31:51.39 while Melkamu Haileyesus (Ethiopia) and Kenya’s Linet Masai secured silver and bronze after clocking 31:55.50 and 31:59.36 respectively.

In the 4*400m relays, Rwanda’s quartet of Hermas Muvunyi, Emmanuel Ntakirutimana, Thimote Bagina and Moussa Bizimana came last in their heat after managing 3.21.01.

The wobbly run continued in the 1500m as Joseph Nzirorera failed to qualify from the heat stage after clocking 3 minutes, 51 seconds and 12 micro seconds to finish ninth.
Ethiopia’s Gebremedhin Woldegirgis edged Kenya’s Silas Kiplagat to win the race in a time of 3.44.24.

Kiplagat was six micro-seconds off the pace while South Africa’s Johan Cronje rounded off the top three slots in a time of 3.51.12.

In the 200m heats, Said Hamisi Ndayisaba was far away from the qualifying mark as he ran 22.93 to finish seventh in heat six while Sophie Kanakuze set a new national record 26.76 but it was still not enough to qualify her.
