Kigali City has announced it will construct a new modern garbage site in a move to strengthen environmental protection measures and ensuring sanitation and hygiene in the Capital City.

Alphonse Nizeyimana, Kigali City vice Mayor in charge of finance and economic development, disclosed this yesterday in an interview with The New Times.

"The study of the site is now at an advanced stage,” Nizeyimana said, adding that it will cost Rwf 300m.

The new landfill to be built in Kigali Sector, Nyarugenge District, will replace Nyanza Landfill which will be closed once the new one is complete.

In the 2010/2011 financial year, the City Council had allocated over Rwf 1.4bn for the construction of the new landfill, but Nizeyimana said that the money will only be used to begin construction work.

He said that the terms of reference have so far been sent to Rwanda Public Procurement Authority (RPPA) to handle the tendering procedure of the Physical Detailed Master Plan (PDMP) of the new site.

RPPA awards, on behalf of public procuring entities, tenders whose value exceeds Rwf 3m and examines and approve tender documents and evaluation reports for tenders above Rwf 2m.
