NYAGATARE - Residents of Karama Sector, in Nyagatare District, have bought 99 crossbreed cattle, worth Rwf19million, as part of efforts to boost the government cattle stocking programme of One Cow-per-house hold.

The Sector Executive Secretary, Stanley Muganwa, explained that they initiated the idea after realising the role of cattle in poverty eradication.

"It’s a noble initiative by our residents. They developed it purposely to uplift their poor fellow residents,” he said.
According to Muganwa, each resident contributes between Rwf500 and 1000 which is deposited on an account in Banque Populaire.

"They contribute up to Rwf2 million and the bank offers an additional loan to this contribution for them to buy cows. They have so far bought 95 crossbreeds and the target is over 120 cows,” he said.

Alexandre Bagirubusa, one of the residents who spoke to The New Times, said that the initiative is a positive one.
"Many poor families have gained from this initiative. If our president decided to give every poor Rwandan family a cow, then why can’t we support his developmental initiative?” he said.

"We want every resident in our sector to own a cow”.
