RUBAVU – The Social Democratic Party (PSD) presidential candidate, Dr Jean Damascene Ntawukuriryayo, has promised to enhance literacy levels once elected president in the August 9 poll.

Addressing cheerful supporters at a rally in Rugerero Sector, Rubavu District, yesterday, Dr Ntawukuriryayo, added that his administration would double the salary of primary and secondary school teachers.

His rally was attended by senior party officials like Minister Stanislas Kamanzi, Governor of the Western Province, Celestin Kabahizi and MPs, among others.

The PSD candidate and his wife, clad in party T-shirts and caps danced along with his joyous supporters.

"The most disturbing problem in this country is illiteracy, and when you vote for me, I will make sure that within two years of my term, all Rwandans are able to read and write,” Ntawukuriryayo said.

He also pledged to raise family planning penetration to at least 70% to control population growth.

Excited party faithful sang "Tora PSD, Igihe n’iki”, loosely translated to mean ‘Vote for PSD, This is the time’.

Ntawukuriryayo also rallied Genocide survivors, promising to ensure houses for all of them. He also promised to transform agriculture.

"People of Rubavu, Nyabihu and Rutsiro districts, when you vote for me, Ntawukuriryayo, I will earmark 10% of the national budget to agriculture and livestock development so that your neighbours in DRC come to buy food from you,” he added.

He said that many in the international community were surprised that a developing country, like Rwanda, is able to hold presidential campaigns involving many political parties, peacefully.
