University Teaching Hospital of Kigali (CHUK) will relocate from its current site in Nyarugenge District to Masaka Hospital in Kicukiro District.

Dr Tharcisse Mpunga, the director general of CHUK, confirmed the relocation plans but mentioned that details are being handled by the Ministry of Health.

"The hospital is very old and needs deep renovation and extension as it was built in the 20s. Additionally, considering the current neighbourhood, the location is inappropriate,” said Zachee Iyakaremye, Permanent Secretary of the Rwanda Ministry of Health.

Iyakaremye said that the hospital’s upgrade is courtesy of a grant from the Chinese government given the strong partnership between the two countries.

The hospital will have a capacity of over 800 beds which is greater than the hospital’s current capacity of 519, to extensively support the provision of good treatment like it has been doing. Iyakaremye told The New Times the government is still discussing the way forward for Masaka Hospital
