The Pan African Dance Festival (FESPAD), on Saturday, kicked off at Amahoro National Stadium, Kigali with a spectacular show of dance, art, and music from local, regional and international artistes.

The opening ceremony, which was attended by President Paul Kagame and other dignitaries, was organized by the Rwanda Development Board in partnership with the Ministry of Sports and Culture.

In his speech, the President said that FESPAD, puts Africa on the limelight and the exchange of culture can spur development and promote peace across the continent.

Kagame, who had just returned from campaign rallies in Ngororero and Muhanga districts, drew loud cheers from the audience, who chanted RPF slogans in show of support for their candidate in the August 9, presidential polls.

On his part, John Gara, the CEO of RDB said that FESPAD was more than just dance.

"Besides celebrating African cultural diversity, this year’s FESPAD is yet another opportunity for Rwanda to showcase immense investment potential in Tourism and the Creative Arts industry,” Gara said.

The audience, was treated to a magnificent 15-minutes of fireworks and choreography performance from youth who were trained and inspired from the skill, strength, and spirituality of Chinese performances

Famous artists, including Miss JoJo, Tom Close, Rafiki, Chameleon (Uganda), AY (Tanzania) and Koffi Olomide thrilled the already energized crowd.

The MCs, who included former Big Brother Africa housemate, Gaetano Kaggwa,  and Contact fm stars, Lion Imanzi and Cynthia Umurungi did not disappoint.

Uganda’s top musician, Jose Chameleon fired-up the crowd, pulling them off their seats and inviting them to come closer to the stage which was mounted in the center of the stadium.

"I love Rwanda for three reasons only. First, I love President Paul Kagame because how he has changed Rwanda; if people do not think so, let them just look around and see for themselves. Secondly, I love Rwanda because Kigali City is the cleanest place I have ever seen…and lastly I love Rwanda because everyone is beautiful!” Chameleon said.

FESPAD concludes on July 31, with performers from various countries across the globe expect to perform. Angola, China, DRC, Burundi, Uganda, Madagascar, Namibia, Angola, South Africa, Guinea Conakry, Egypt , and USA are some of the countries that have confirmed their participation.
