Congo 2-0 Rwanda
Zambia 1-0 Mauritius
Nigeria 2-0 Guinea
Egypt 2-0 Uganda
Sudan 0-2 Kenya
Gambia 4-1 Sierra Leone
RWANDA’S U-20 team arrives in the country this afternoon and goes straight to camp to start preparing for the return leg match in a fortnight in Kigali.
The Junior Wasps were humbled 2-0 on Saturday away to Congo Brazzaville in the first leg qualifier of the 2011 Africa Youth Championships which will be staged in Libya. Congo’s goals were scored by Mbuga Makaye in either half.
According to Ferwafa Chief Executive Officer Jules Kalisa, the team will head straight into camp to rectify the weaknesses that led to the defeat.
The Junior Wasps need a 3-0 win in the return leg to be assured of a place in the final qualifying round whose winner will qualify for the finals scheduled for March 18 to April 1, 2011.
Rwanda’s strike partnership of Jack Tuyisenge and Kipson Atuheire failed to bring any positive impact into the game. Tuyisenge was substituted by Ismail Habumugisha but they could not break a solid defense of the winners of the 2007 Africa Youth Championship.
Rwanda had their chances to get on the score sheet through Atuheire, Jean Claude Iranzi and Bienfait Kabanda but poor finishing which seems to be a general problem for Rwandan teams followed the junior wasps.
Elsewhere, Mauritius lost 1-0 to Zambia in a game played at Nkoloma stadium in Lusaka. Uganda lost to Egypt 2-0 away in Cairo; while Kenya made little work of hosts Sudan with a 2-0 win on Khartoum.
The second leg matches will take place on the weekend of August 6-8 with the winners advancing to the second round.
Seven teams from the qualifiers will join hosts Libya for the final tournament.
