NYAGATARE-The Minister of Gender and Family Promotion, Dr. Jeanne d’Arc Mujawamariya, on Saturday commissioned a maize mill worth Rwf28million owned by Muslim women in Nyagatare District under the Nyagatare Vision Cooperative.

The maize plant, donated by a German Muslim community (Muslimehelfen) represented by its chairman, Ahamad Von Denfer, has the capacity to process five tonnes of maize flour a day.

Mujawamariya told the Muslim women to always use the opportunity they get from the government of National Unity.

"You all know that Muslim Women were denied their rights for so long…but today’s government has put in place women emancipation where you can manage such a plant that has been donated to you. You should always use this opportunity effectively,” she advised.

The Mufti of Rwanda, Shekh Saleh Harelimana, thanked Ahamad Von Denfer, for his exceptional efforts of financing the construction of the plant.

He also called on Muslim women to always strive to attain sustainable development and access education which is a key factor in the transformation of their social welfare.

Fatuma Mukakarara, the cooperative’s President, highlighted lack of land to plant maize but thanked the Rwanda Muslim Community for providing them with two hectares of land where over five tones of maize was harvested. She said the harvest will be the starting point of the mill.

The district vice Mayor, Rebecca Karungi, promised the members land where they could cultivate the maize to feed the plant.
