The Rwanda Development Board (RDB) intends to exploit the weeklong Pan African Dance Festival (FESPAD) opening today, as an opportunity to boost Rwanda’s tourism sector and make it the most profitable in the region.

The official opening of FESPAD will take place at Amahoro National Stadium and will feature diverse performances including choreographies, a parade from participating countries and a concert with local, regional and international stars, notably, Lauryn Hill, a five times Grammy award winner.

Twelve countries are set to participate in this year’s festival.

Linda Mutesi, the PR of RDB Business Operations and Services, confirmed that many visitors are expected into Rwanda to participate in the festival, who will also visit various cultural and historical sites.

"On top of making Rwanda a regional tourism destination, FESPAD is expected to present an opportunity to showcase investment opportunities as well as propel our local artists in showcasing their talent to a wider audience who can export their message,” Mutesi said in a phone interview yesterday.

Launched in February 1998 during the 67th Session of Ministers of the OAU, now the African Union, the biennial dance festival aims at promoting the culture of peace and exchange of African culture.
