Kigali City Council (KCC) has started a campaign to improve cleanliness in the city.

On Wednesday, a team headed by the Director of Health at KCC, Vestine Mukeshimana, visited Nyamirabo, Gitega and Nyakabanda sectors of Nyarugenge District, and urged residents to promote hygiene in the homes and neighbourhoods.

Speaking from Biryogo Cell, Nyamirambo Sector, Mukeshimana, said: "I advise you, as cell leaders and residents of Kigali City, to make sanitation a top priority because this will help you to prevent diseases such as cholera and malaria,” said Mukeshimana, who was accompanied by several other KCC officials.

She asked health counselors to always sensitize and mobilise residents to drink boiled water, and to clear bushes around their homes. The official also warned against dumping garbage alongside roads.

The team inspected several bars, shops and restaurants in the Biryogo area. Some were ordered to close due to insufficient hygiene.

Speaking to The New Times shortly after the exercise, Mukeshimana said that KCC has so far trained over 35 cell leaders in the city on how to improve hygiene.
She revealed that city authorities are planning a similar exercise in Kicukiro and Gasabo districts next month.

Mukeshimana said that overall the city had registered progress in hygiene issues in hotels, schools, among other public places.
