GICUMBI - A total of 20 cows were last Sunday donated by the Rwanda Defence Forces (RDF) to poor residents of Rushaki, Kaniga, Mukarange, Cyumba, Rubaya and Manyagiro sectors, Gicumbi district.

The Commander of the Reserve Force, Lt. General Fred Ibingira, handed over the cows at Mulindi Cell playground.
"These cows were donated to poor residents as part of the ongoing Army Week, to eradicate poverty,” Ibingira, told the beneficiaries.

He added that the RDF is a revolutionary army, committed to guaranteeing national security, while participating in humanitarian activities aimed at eradicating poverty among Rwandans.

On his part, the Governor of the Northern Province, Aime Bosenibamwe, called on residents to work hand-in-hand with RDF which he described as the peoples’ army.

"Unlike past armies which unleashed terror on their compatriots, RDF is committed to addressing local residents’ wellbeing while at the same time guarding Rwanda’s sovereignty,” said Bosenibamwe.

He called on Gicumbi residents to give a ‘red card’ to elements bent on dividing Rwandans along ethnic lines, adding that the current government of National Unity has made tremendous strides in promoting good governance and reviving the economy.

The recipients of the cows danced and sang in praise of President Kagame, whom they said is committed to addressing their problems.

"I am extremely happy to receive a cow donated by RDF, which will generate milk and help to prevent malnutrition in my family,” said a resident from Cyumba Sector, Chantal Mugiraneza.

During the same occasion, a football match between Mulindi FC and Gicumbi District ended 2-1 in favour of Mulindi FC.

The occasion was also marked by a get together party (Ubusabane) and a visit to a trench at Mulindi tea factory, used during the liberation struggle.

Mayor Bonane Nyangezi, RDF 2nd Division commander Brig. General Alex Kagame, 408 Brigade Commander Brig. General Eric Murokore and Brig. General Jack Musemakweli were among those present.
