Residents of Kanombe Sector, Kicukiro District, on Friday, celebrated achievements registered in the area for the past few years, a ceremony that saw the inauguration of electricity and water in the area.

Local leaders, religious, and opinion leaders, the army and representatives from various institutions attended the function.  

In his address, Donatien Murenzi, the Executive Secretary of the Sector commended the different stakeholders with whom they have worked to achieve the developments they were celebrating.

He also highlighted the various achievements, attributing them to the commitment of the residents. 

"Over 4,500 homes in the area now have access to electricity and residents fetch water in a distance less than 200 metres, the recommended distance for every Rwandan,” Murenzi said. 

According to the official, residents contributed 50 percent of the cost for electricity installation, which was equivalent to about Rwf70m.

He pointed out that RECO-RWASCO and Water For All, an international organization supported the provision of water to the area.  

Residents have also come together through the land consolidation programme to collectively benefit from a common crop harvest. 

"We are soon harvesting approximately 100 tonnes of maize from 35 hectors where residents have worked together,” he said, adding that they plan to plant different crops on the same scale next season. 

At the same event, eight residents received cows as part of the government-championed One Cow per Poor Family Project; an initiative Murenzi said is progressing well in the sector.

Meanwhile, resident representatives commended activities done by the army during the Army Week which saw the road connecting Rubize Cell to Kanombe Military Police rehabilitated by the army.    

The event was presided over by the district Mayor, Paul Jules Ndamage.
