With only days left to the kick off of the presidential campaigns, local leaders at the grass root level have been urged to give equal opportunities to campaigners to ensure peaceful campaigns.

The call was made by Bishop John Rucyahana, Chairman of the National Unity and Reconciliation Commission (NURC), after a meeting aimed at developing strategies for calm presidential campaigns and elections slated for August 9.

The meeting attracted representatives of political party at the national level, civil society representatives, lawmakers and political commission members of parliament, among others.

"As NURC, we have been building the community on unity and reconciliation to attain national peace for the last 16 years.” Rucyahana told the participants.

He cautioned them to avoid unlawful practices and situations similar to what caused the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

"As campaigns set off, the Genocide ideology should be strongly avoided,” he underscored.
