GATUNA - Rwandan refugees estimated between 1,800 and 1,900 Rwandan refugees were on Wednesday night repatriated from Kyaka II and Nakivale refugee camps of western Uganda.

The returnees arrived with their luggage through Gatuna border post and were received by central and local government officials.

They were then transferred to Gicumbi transit camp located near Rukomo trading center, about 30 km along Gatuna-Kigali highway.

Addressing returnees yesterday, the Minister of Disaster Preparedness and Refugee Affairs, Gen. Marcel Gatsinzi, called on them to settle and live in harmony with other residents in their respective districts of origin.

"The government of national unity is committed to repatriating all Rwandan refugees, so that they can also take part in the development of our nation,” said Gatsinzi.

He assured the returnees of the full cooperation from his ministry, to ensure that they receive all necessary requirements to enable them settle in their respective localities.

"It is important that you work closely with local leaders in your respective districts, to steer economic development, "he added.

Northern Province governor Aime Bosenibamwe called on the returnees to change their mindset by turning a deaf ear on negative elements still bent on dividing Rwandans along ethnic lines.

"Each family will be given food and other domestic necessities enough to last for three months while in their respective districts,” said Mark Shakagabo, an official at the transit camp.

Also present to receive the returnees at Gicumbi transit camp was Mayor Bonane Nyangezi and Rwanda Defense Forces area commander Brig. Gen Eric Murokore.
