MUSANZE - The MTN Foundation has donated 36 computers to Ecole Secondaire Apredi-ESA Ruhengeri, as part of the foundation’s programme of promoting information and communication technology in the country.

The donation handed over on Wednesday, also includes free Internet connection for a period of one year.

The MTN Foundation is supported by MTN Rwanda, taking 1% of its profits after tax, to finance projects in the areas of education, health and economic empowerment.

Alfonse Byusa, the board chairman, said investing in projects which positively impact on the lives of Rwandans underscores their support to the government’s goal of increasing ICT usage.

ESA-Ruhengeri, a science school with over 700 students, had only 10 computers, and this donation is seen as a great boost.

"Eight students shared a computer during computer lessons, which affected our performance. The computer laboratory will help students in terms of research,’’ the headmaster, Jean Basangabo, said.

Speaking during the ceremony, the Musanze Mayor, Winifrida Mpembyemungu, commended MTN Foundation for the support, challenging the students and school authorities to make better use of the computers.

ICT program is a good opportunity that should be exploited to steer development, she said.
