KARONGI - The verdict in the case where Jean Baptiste Hakizimana, the former vice Mayor in Karongi District in charge of economic development, is accused of swindling government funds will be read today.

Hakizimana is accused of unlawfully obtaining Rwf100,000 from Penelope Kantarama, the former Governor of the Western Province.

The funds were meant for the renovation of the Governor’s residence. Kantarama, who is currently the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Internal Security, two weeks ago, confirmed that she had paid the cash to Hakizimana.
Prosecution has requested for a 15-year jail term for Hakizimana.

The case is being heard by judge Adolph Udahemuka, of Karongi District Intermediate Court.

Hakizimana is jointly accused with Jean Bosco Bagaragaza, whom prosecution seeks a 7-year sentence.The district has sued for Rwf3.1m in damages.
