NYAGATARE - The head of the laboratory department at Nyagatare Health Centre, , has been arrested for allegedly defiling a 17-year-old girl who he later aided to abort.
Theogene Niyonzima, was arrested last Wednesday, Police sources said.

"We got a tip-off from residents and we found him at his house with the girl she defiled. The girl had come to him seeking his help to carry out an abortion,” Police said yesterday.

Area residents said they alerted Police after seeing the girl at the suspect’s home.

"We talked to the girl after the incident and she said Niyonzima told her that before aborting, they first had to have to sleep together,” one of the residents said.

Others who spoke to The New Times said it was Niyonzima’s business to help young girls carry out abortions.

"We have been suspecting him for so long. We used to see many pregnant girls visiting his house. It’s been his business,” another said.

However, Police said that the suspect denied all allegations against him. "He first confessed when we arrested him, but later denied. We are carrying out more investigations into the case,” a police official said.
