Rwanda’s leading telecom company, MTN, has slashed hotspot fares by 50 percent from Rwf30 to Rwf15 per Mb.
The product allows MTN subscribers in Kigali to surf Internet from their laptop computers at any time of the day or night.

According to an MTN statement, the bundles will remain the same, the cost is still the same and the balance will not change.

"However, the difference is in the usage, were a customer can download a 10Mb file with 5Mb when using WiFi (Hotspot) but they can’t download a 10Mb file with 5Mb when using GPRS/3G,” the statement reads.

The statement also indicates that the new promotion will only apply to WiFi subscribers. Officials said that if one is using 3G/GPRS to browse, they will pay the normal rates or Rwf30 per Mb and the current bundle rates.

It further states that the product will apply to the both pre-paid and post-paid customers. The product is part of the company’s strategy to penetrate the data market in the country.

The data market in Rwanda is dominated by Rwandatel, which boast of the providing the biggest chunk of Internet services with an estimated market share of 65 percent.

"The WiFi booster has also reduced to Rwf20,000 from Rwf25,000” the statement stated.
