NYANZA- 101 people from the districts of Nyamasheke and Karongi, last Friday completed a three- week training in handcrafts.

The training, which took place in Nyanza District, was organised by the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA-Rwanda) as part of its outreach programmes.

Geoffrey Ngiruwonsanga, the coordinator of ADRA-Rwanda, said the training was meant to equip participants with necessary knowledge to create their own jobs.

"We selected people with limited means so that they can have a source of income. We plan to provide them with basic materials for them to form cooperatives in which they will put into practice what they jave been taught,” said Ngiruwonsanga.

He pointed out the need for Rwandans to reduce dependence on agriculture, due to limited land.

"I am now able to make a basket. We hope that the District will help us form cooperatives so that the knowledge we acquired may be put to use,” said Lucie Mukabacondo, from Nyamasheke.

In his closing remarks, Bernard Kayumba, the Karongi District Mayor, commended ADRA for its role of transforming residents’ welfare and pledged the district’s support to the trainees.

"The District will provide a working place for the trainees and help them get markets for their products,” he said.
