Fabregas: Desperate to play

2010 Fifa World Cup final

Spain vs Holland (8.30pm)
Live on TVR and SS3

CESC Fabregas admits he is ‘desperate’ to be involved the World Cup final, but understands if he is left out of the Spain team to face Holland.

The Arsenal captain Fabregas has yet to start a match in South Africa, with the likes of Xabi Alonso and Sergio Busquets keeping the midfielder out of the team.

Fabregas concedes it ‘hurts’ not to be in Vicente del Bosque’s starting line-up ahead of Spain’s bid to add the world crown to the European Championship success of two years ago.

Del Bosque is unlikely to tinker with a winning formula for today’s showdown with the Oranje, but Fabregas is eager to at least play some part in Johannesburg.

"I’m so proud Spain is in the World Cup final, but it means nothing if we don’t win it,” Fabregas told The Sun.

"I am desperate to play at least some part in the game.
"What player on the planet wouldn’t be? It’s everything we dream of from the moment we start kicking a ball to the moment we learn all about the world’s greatest football tournament.

"Of course I believe I can play a part in making history for our country, which has never won a World Cup before.

"To just be a part of a World Cup final would be beyond belief, the stuff of dreams. That’s why I just can’t wait for the game.”
