AS Kigali head Coach Andre Casa Mbungo says his side’s major target in the 2022/23 season is to win the Rwanda premier league trophy.
The Kigali City sponsored team beat APR 5-3 in a penalty shootout to win the Super Cup last weekend. The super cup pits the winners of the league title and the Peace cup.
AS Kigali start their campaign against Etincelles FC at Kigali stadium on Friday.
Mbungo said his team needs not just better technical and tactical improvement but more importantly a strong mentality if they are to win the league.
"We made so many changes in the team during the transfer window. We are still learning how to be at the top and managing the pressures that come with it. We need to be consistent, and if we can do that for the whole season, I don’t see why we can’t win the league.” Mbungo said.
The season will begin with five games on match day 1 (Friday, August 19), where champions APR FC take on Musanze FC at Kigali Stadium, Bugesera FC will host last season’s league runners-up Kiyovu Sports at Bugesera stadium.
In other games, Sunrise will host Police FC at Nyagatare Stadium while Espoir will take on Marine at Rusizi Stadium.
On Saturday, August 20, three more matches will be played; Rayon sports will host Rutsiro FC at Kigali Stadium for the third time since the Western-based was promoted to the topflight league.
Newcomer and Eastern-based Rwamagana City FC will play Gorilla FC at Ngoma Stadium while Gasogi United face Mukura Victory Sports at Kigali stadium.
The biggest match of the season which always has many fans in anticipation – APR vs Rayon Sports – will be played on December 17th at Kigali Stadium on match day fourteen.
There are 16 league sides in the top flight which includes: APR, Rayon Sport, Police, SC Kiyovu, Marines, Bugesera, Espoir, Mukura, Etincelles, AS Kigali, Gasogi United, Gorilla, Sunrise, Musanze and Rwamagana City.
