Kigali City Council (KCC) has unveiled plans to work closely with all communities living in the city for proper waste management.

Addressing students of FAWE Girls School, the Director of Infrastructure in Kigali City, Reuben Ahimbisibwe, said that the city is planning to adopt and promote recycling of waste to reduce on the negative impacts of poor waste management.

Ahimbisibwe said that the objective of the campaign was to sensitize the students and the citizens on their role in waste management.

He said that KCC plans to organize workshops for waste management stakeholders in order to sensitize them on proper waste handling, especially separate waste keeping, collection and transportation.  

He added that the campaign will also target public institutions like REMA, the Ministry of Infrastructure, Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Agency (RURA), Rwanda Bureau of Standards (RBS) and waste collection and transportation associations, hotels, restaurants, health and hygiene inspectors at sector levels, environmental NGOs and religious leaders.

Ahimbisibwe urged the students to sensitize their communities on separating recyclable and non-recyclable waste.

"I encourage you as students to work closely with KCC to help change the mindsets of all city residents towards the better management of waste for our city to continue being one of the cleanest in the region,” Ahimbisibwe said.
